Reliable Chip Sealing by Atlas Asphalt

Asphalt chip seal is a cost-effective road surfacing method that involves spraying a layer of liquid asphalt onto an existing pavement and then covering it with small aggregate stones that are then compacted. This creates a rough, textured surface that helps improve traction and seals the underlying road from water damage and deterioration. Commonly used on rural roads and residential streets, chip seal is quicker and not as costly to apply than traditional asphalt paving.

  • Surface preparation – The existing pavement is cleaned of dirt, dust, and debris, and any major cracks or potholes are repaired.
  • Application of asphalt binder – A hot liquid asphalt (emulsion) is sprayed evenly across the surface using a distributor truck.
  • Spreading aggregate (chips) – Small, clean stones are immediately spread over the hot asphalt layer.
  • Rolling/compaction – Rollers press the aggregate into the asphalt so the stones embed firmly.
  • Sweeping excess chips – After the surface sets, loose gravel is swept away to prevent hazards.
  • Curing and setting – The surface is allowed to cure, during which traffic may be controlled or slowed.
  • Final inspection/optional second layer – In some cases, a second chip seal layer is applied for added durability.
